Bedbugs are small beetle like pests that live off of human blood. They are flat and shaped like a teardrop often too small to really notice until they have already eaten your blood. Most people don’t diagnose bedbugs until covered in itchy red wounds caused by their bite. These tiny bugs are small enough to hide in the folds of fabric as small as the seam on your mattress or the tag on your pillow. When they are in a large enough mass together they give off a sickly sweet smell, and they reproduce incredibly fast laying tiny white eggs in your bedding. The problem is that they can show up even in the cleanest of places if they have been introduced to the location by traveling in someone’s luggage or clothing.

The first thing to know about bedbugs is that they are preventable, and prevention is always superior to resolving a crisis after it has occurred. Pest control companies can give you mattress and box spring encasements, which are in essence envelopes or covers that slip onto your mattress and stop bedbugs from being able to find places to hide and lay their eggs. Unfortunately, these encasements do little more than trap existing bedbug inside, hopefully for long enough to kill them. It doesn’t prevent infestations or fix them.

Many people claim to have home remedies that work for bedbugs, and while some of them (like cedar wood) work to an extent, they are not enough of a solution to actually get rid of bedbugs.
